New Windows 11 Build 22623.1255 – New Notepad with Tabs, More Task Manager Changes, and Fixes (Beta)

Before talking about anything that is new in the Beta Channel, we need to talk about the changes regarding the Beta Channel System.

Starting today, Microsoft is releasing updates to the Beta Channel that put Windows Insiders into one of two groups similar to what they did back in 2019:

  • A group of Insiders in the Beta Channel will receive Build 22623.xxx updates that will have new features getting rolled out or turned on via an enablement package like how we release updates for Windows 10 today.
  • A group of Insiders in the Beta Channel will receive Build 22621.xxx updates that will have new features turned off by default.

This way, Microsoft will be able to test out new features easier.

If you receive the Build that has all the features automatically turned off, you can enable them manually in 2 ways:

  • Search for Update in the Settings App Windows Update
  • Use Vivetool to manually enable the features

New Notepad with Tabs

Microsoft is beginning to roll out tabs in Notepad to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel (version 11.2301.17.0).

Fixes in Build 22623.1255

Taskbar and System Tray

  • Fixed an issue where Start would open behind the taskbar when entering it while using the touch keyboard.
  • Fixed an issue where the taskbar would disappear when switching from Task view to a Win32 app icon through the tablet-optimized taskbar.

Task Manager

  • Process names typed into the search box should no longer unexpected get spellchecked.
  • Fixed a couple of issues with how Narrator was reading out content in Task Manager.
  • Fixed an issue where the dropdowns in settings might not match your currently selected theme.
  • When using search on the App History page, results should no longer suddenly disappear.
  • If you open the Default Start Page dropdown in settings, clicking the Task Manager window should make the dropdown disappear now.
