In this article, we will discuss the Windows 12 vs. a New Windows 11 Version Debate that is coming in 2024.

The New Microsoft Leadership Team prefers having one major Windows platform update every year (e.g. Germanium for 24H2, Selenium? for 25H2, etc.) instead of the Panos strategy which was one new version of Windows as part of a new platform release every 3 years with Moments in between.

Windows 12 is now less likely to be released in 2024, as Microsoft would risk of more fragmentation.

Hudson Valley is still on track to ship in 2024 on top of the Germanium platform with a lot of new features and changes but will more likely be branded as a Windows 11 Update.

It’s unknown what will happen to Moments later, but for now Moment 5 remains on track to ship in February 2024 with new features such as voice access improvements, an updated phone and PC link experience, AI/machine learning snap assist suggestions, and more.

Germanium RTM is expected in April but Hudson Valley won’t be done until August and won’t be available as an update until Sept/Oct 2024.

It’s also referred to as “Windows 2024”, and in Windows 11 files we can notice references to Windows 11 24H1.

For example Dell for their new laptops mentioning that WiFi 7 requires “Windows 11 version 24H1”.

New Features

AI-powered Windows Shell with an “advanced Copilot”, new history/timeline feature, AI-enhanced search, “Super Resolution” for AI video/game quality upscaling, enhanced Live Captions, “creator” areas in Start and File Explorer, parallax for desktop backgrounds, new energy saver (early testing atm in Canary, there are more related bits to come). Some of the AI features will require an NPU to function.

AI Super Resolution feature, enhanced Live Captions, the AI Shell w/ Advanced Copilot, and CorePC is still in the works but it’s unclear when they will ship.

Release Date

As for the Release Date, we cannot know for sure just yet, but it is expected in September or October as it was the case in 2021.
